The history of Whiting and Robertsdale is now online. The Whiting-Roberstdale Historical Society has launched a website. It is at wrhistoricalsociety.com.
The website is starting off small, with only a handful of stories and photos about our community’s history, but it will gradually grow as items are added to it on a regular basis. “Our museum on 119th Street is too small and crowded to be open to the public on a regular basis,” said Priscilla McCarty-Reed, the president of the Historical Society. “So this gives us a chance to bring our collections to the public, and lets everyone have access to some of the wonderful items we have that tell the story of Whiting and Robertsdale.”
The website currently has stories about Whiting people, such as a profile of artist Al Odlivak, Whiting’s Norman Rockwell. It has photos of places such as Whiting Park. It has stories and photos of events, such as how Whiting celebrated the 4th of July back in 1925. It shows some of the objects in the Historical Society’s collections, such as a candle produced by the candle factory which operated in the oil refinery from 1893 to 1956. It also has memories of people who lived here, a complete events list of what’s going on in Whiting-Robertsdale today, and news on some of the developments in the community. It even has a list of books with a Whiting connection, in case you want to read more about where you live.
“I am incredibly excited to be a part of the new website for the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society,” said Hannah Dominiak, who is building the website. “It has been such a fun experience to build this site, not to mention a great learning experience. I've learned so much about the community I grew up in, and am grateful to be part of preserving its history in a digital archive.”
The website has some interactive opportunities for visitors to add their own thoughts and memories of life in Whiting-Robertsdale.
Volunteers Gayle Faulkner Kosalko, Chuck Kosalko, Frank Vargo and John Hmurovic have been doing most of the planning for the website and providing most of its content. More volunteers are always welcome. You can contact Frank at 219-659-2190 for more details. Please leave a voicemail message.
The Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the launch of their new website.
The goal of the new WRCC website is to inform the community of the Chamber's vision and the part it plays within the Whiting-Robertsdale community besides just putting on city-wide events. It also puts on events to help benefit the business community in Whiting-Robertsdale, such as networking mixers, presentations on business building and social media, and more. The new website will also highlight chamber members, inform the community of large and small scale events, and be a hub of community resources.
The WRCC teamed up with Hannah Dominiak to build the new website. Dominiak is a longtime Whiting resident and coordinator of the Social Media Team for Pierogi Fest®. She has also built both websites for Pierogi Fest® and Wickedly Whiting.
This new and improved Chamber website will launch on July 1st, just in time to be apart of prime of community events that are both Chamber- and city-sponsored, such as the Whiting Fourth of July Celebration, Pierogi Fest®, the Sheridan Summer Concert Series and Summer with the Symphony in Whiting Park.
